My Annual Smoked Fish Fest
Every year I host a Yom Kippur break-the-fast at my apartment. This year, however, was a special occasion, as it was the first in my new apartment. For once, my guests didn't have to experience cramming into a tiny studio, feeling more like fish (sardines, as it were) than the smoked lox on the platters before them. There was actually room to walk around!
Happily, as in year's past, no one went home hungry. Here was the menu:
Bagels & bialys
Cream cheese - incl. scallion and veggie flavors
Homemade egg salad
Whitefish Salad
Smoked Mackerel
Chubbs
Kippered Salmon
Novia Scotia Lox
Homemade cucumber salad
Mixed olives
Sliced tomatoes and red onions
Sliced Jarlsberg and Muenster cheese
And - of course - my infamous noodle kugel
Not surprisingly, after that light supper some of us still had room for dessert:
Delightfully sinful cookies brought by my friends Stacie and Mike
Glorious apple tart from Marquet Patisserie brought by Maggie and Mark
A bottle of Moscato D'Asti from my inspired pal Amy
If you scroll down ths blog, you'll note that I recently made a rapturous cocktail combo of that same-said sweet, sparkling dessert wine with strawberry puree. Luckily, I still had some puree to spare in my fridge. Mmmmm. What a deliciously deep pink, fizzy way to finish the meal.
(To the strains of "Fiddler on the Roof"): This might become an annual tradition.
