The 5th Food Group
Got a last minute invite to a Chivas Regal whisky tasting last night. Looking back on it in the light of day, the event wasn't terribly educational. But, on the other hand, it was most definitely entertaining - and the free booze didn't hurt either.
Entered the tasting to be greeted by not one but two gentlemen holding trays of Chivas Coolers, a simple mix of Chivas, ginger ale and a wedge of lime for a citrus edge. Very nice. The bar also offer a riff on the green apple martini, using Chivas of course. Not as nice.
Then an attractive Scotsman in full kilt gear began playing the theme to Star Wars on the bagpipes. (Yes, you read correctly.) Clearly, this was an indication that we should take our seats and expect a journey to a galaxy far, far away.
I didn't get too far.
The Scot was funny, pulling out a bevy of jokes focusing on the Irish and the Brits, as well as the "cheapskate" Scots. Had a strange feeling that the routine was getting a bit tired after his 15 week tour of the U.S., but he got the crowd rolling nonetheless:
Chivas has been known to give a Scot what we call Whisky Constipation - We can't pass a bottle.
Drum snare ensues. You get the idea...
He did provide a brief lesson on the geography of Scotland and how it impacts the manufacturing of whisky, etc. But, I really think the whole event was more about getting a taste for Chivas than a real education in whisky.
Perhaps they offer more in-depth seminar for bartending pros. Hope I get invited to that one next time around.
But, then again, that Chivas Cooler was lovely - and free. I'm feeling Scottish already...
