BBQ, Tex-Mex & Texas Wines
Back from Austin, where I had a fine - and delicious - time. Didn't eat at one establishment that lacked a stuffed animal head with horns.
Had Tex-Mex at the infamous Chuy's, a First Daughter favorite, and also indulged in mouthwatering tacos at Guero's, well-known as Renee Zellwegger's favorite Tex-Mex haunt in the city. (Considering the portions, I'm guessing that she hasn't visited since she wrapped on "Bridget Jones's Diary.")
Also journeyed out to Texas Hill Country for the wineries and biergartens. Who knew there was a big German population out in Texas? Makes for good beer though. Took a real shine to a local brew named Shiner Bock.
And, on my last day in town, finally got to the meat - BBQ. We're talkin' an appetizer platter at one of Austin's finest - The County Line BBQ - for a plate heaped with smoked brisket, peppered smoked turkey, a Flintstone's worthy beef rib, spicy homemade sausage and a half-side of lucsious baby back ribs, all cradled in a sauce that was too die - gorgeous orange, tomato, garlic, onion, cumin and chilis blended to perfection. Not the wisest meal selection before getting on an airplane bound for glamorous Newark - but worth it. Look for my next column to compare and contrast real Texas BBQ with its NY brethren.
P.S. Best Texas visual - A jeep parked in a gas station, complete with gun rack with rifles a plenty and a real smoker attached in back, blowing a hot mesquite scent as it cooked the "kill of the day." I want to tailgate with these folks!
